Trimming, Resizing, and Compressing Video for Social Media

Every platform has different limits and expectations for video. What actually needs to change before a clip is ready to post.

A video that looks great on the device that recorded it can still show up cropped, oversized, or rejected outright once it hits a social platform, because every platform has its own opinions about length, dimensions, and file size. Getting a clip actually ready to post is usually a combination of two or three of these tools, not just one.

Trimming: cutting length, not content

Trim Video does the simplest and most common fix — cutting a clip down to a shorter start and end point without re-encoding the middle content in any way that changes its look. This is the right first step whenever a recording has dead time at the start (fumbling to hit record) or the end (forgetting to stop), or when a platform enforces a hard length limit and the recording runs long. Trimming first, before resizing or compressing, also means the following steps process less footage overall, which is a genuine speed advantage when a clip is several minutes long.

Resizing: the aspect-ratio problem

This is where most "why does my video look cropped weird" problems actually come from. A video recorded horizontally (16:9, standard widescreen) doesn't fit a platform or placement built around vertical video (9:16, the near-universal shape for Stories, Reels, and TikTok) without something giving — either the sides get cropped off, black bars get added top and bottom, or the whole frame gets stretched out of proportion. Resize Video handles the conversion between these aspect ratios, but it's worth deciding deliberately how you want the mismatch handled (crop to fill the new frame, or pad with bars to preserve the whole original picture) rather than accepting whatever a platform does automatically on upload, which is often the crop that cuts off exactly the part of the frame that mattered.

Compressing: fitting under a size or bitrate limit

Every platform enforces some combination of maximum file size and maximum bitrate, and raw video from a modern phone camera routinely exceeds both by a wide margin. Compress Video reduces file size primarily by lowering the video bitrate (how much data is used to encode each second of footage) — which is a genuine quality-versus-size tradeoff, not a free reduction. The practical approach is to compress only as much as the target platform actually requires, since most platforms re-compress video again on their own end anyway; starting from an already heavily compressed file just means the platform's own compression pass has less real detail left to work with, compounding the quality loss.

Order matters

Trim first, resize second, compress last. Trimming first means every following step processes less footage. Resizing before compressing means the compression pass is optimizing for the final output dimensions, not the original ones — compressing a video and then resizing it down can leave you with more quality loss than necessary for the size you actually end up needing.

When a platform-specific tool does more than the pieces individually

Some tools bundle several of these decisions together for one specific platform's format and conventions rather than leaving each choice manual — useful specifically when you're optimizing for one particular destination and don't need the general-purpose flexibility of doing each step separately.

What none of these fix

None of this addresses actual video quality issues from the original recording — poor lighting, shaky footage, low source resolution. Trimming, resizing, and compressing all work with the footage you actually captured; they can't add detail that was never recorded in the first place. If a clip looks poor before any of these steps, it'll look poor (just smaller, or shaped differently) after them too.
