Frequently asked questions
Does this use AI to redraw my photo as a cartoon character?
No — it's a filter effect: your photo's colors are flattened into fewer shades (posterization) and a dark outline is drawn along detected edges, giving a bold cartoon/comic look. It restyles your existing photo rather than generating a new AI character.
What do the four style buttons do?
Comic, Poster, Sketch, and Soft are just shortcuts that set the three sliders below to a combination that leans into that look — Poster is bolder and flatter, Sketch pushes hard on the outline, Soft is the gentlest. Pick one as a starting point, then adjust any slider afterward to fine-tune it (the style buttons stop highlighting once you do, since the sliders no longer match that preset exactly).
What do the three sliders control?
Smoothing softens fine detail before the effect runs, for cleaner flat color regions. Color levels sets how few shades each color channel is reduced to — lower means a more graphic, poster-like look. Outline strength controls how sensitive the edge detection is and how bold the resulting outline looks.
Does this upload my photo anywhere?
No — everything runs on your device in the browser; your photo is never sent anywhere.
Can I try different settings without starting over?
Yes — pick a different style or adjust any slider and click Cartoonize again; it always re-applies fresh from your original photo, so passes never stack. Click Reset to return to the unedited original.
What file format do I get back?
Your choice — PNG, JPG, or WEBP, all at your original photo's resolution. PNG is lossless and the default; JPG and WEBP give a smaller file if you don't need pixel-perfect edges.
